Greetings Defer families!
Although we are now in September, it still feels like we are in the middle of summer! We should all enjoy the late heat wave while we can because we know what is soon on the way!
Now that we are getting into our second full week of school at Defer, we are in the full swing of things with instruction and assessment.
I have been very pleased with what I have been seeing from staff and students during my classroom walkthroughs. During my walkthroughs one thing has been evidently clear: We have awesome students and staff at Defer! Please make sure you ask your child what they did at school because they are doing a lot!
Teachers have been working hard to prepare students for success. In order to prepare students for the upcoming assessments created by AIR, students are taking assessments on a bi-weekly basis modeled after this exam in order to best prepare our students for the test.
Although our assessments right now are currently paper-based, our plan is to transition to all of our bi-weekly assessments to be computer-based assessments. Teachers have been using the data collected from the assessments to re-tool instruction and provide necessary supports as identified by the data during our TBT (teacher-based-teams) times.
In addition to the creation of common assessments, Defer students are in the midst of completing our fall STAR assessments. The purpose of the STAR test is to identify a baseline score of student ability to perform at grade level in math and language arts.
The results of the assessment show us how our students are performing, as well as how we can best identify interventions and remediation as indicated by the data. The results from our most recent STAR test show great promise, and we will continue to use data gained from STAR to meet the needs of all of our students as we move through the 2018-2019 school year.
The Defer PBIS team met during our first week back to discuss various student supports. For those that do not know, PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. The main goal of our PBIS team for this school year is to strengthen our Tier I student supports as well as implementing Tier II student supports. As we progress throughout the school year, there will be lots of communication regarding opportunities for students to participate in at Defer by making great behavior and academic choices!
As the weather begins to change, it is extremely important that students come to school in appropriate attire. We will continue to have outdoor recess whenever possible, so it is very important that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.
