Rocket Update 1/19/2024

Good afternoon Rocket Families!

I sincerely hope everyone is warm and safe on this cold and snowy Friday. Although I have been attempting to eliminate weather news from my updates, it seems appropriate to mention them today. How many of you were surprised to have TWO snow days off this week?

Going into this winter season, I wasn’t sure we would have any! With the winter weather we had this week, students greeted me with many fun email messages with “pleas” for a snow day along with some funny memes on Twitter (“X”).

Thanks for entertaining me this week. #noschoolmike enjoyed the conversations and fun!

Please take some time to read the following letter provided by our Board Of Education President, Kristin Bedford along with an “invitation” and description of our upcoming Wellness Fair on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Letter From Board President Kristin Bedford:

Streetsboro City School Staff, Students and Community,

Over the past few weeks, the staff, students, parents, administrative leaders, and community members have had access to both in-person and online opportunities to share their input on the qualities desired in the next leader of the Streetsboro City Schools.

The following are the groups that participated in the in-person groups:

  • Teach Staff – 70+ Participants.
  • Support Staff (custodian, bus drivers, secretaries, etc.) – 15 Participants
  • Administrative Team/Central Office Support Staff – 17 Participants
  • HS Students – 15 Participants
  • Booster/PTA/Community Leaders – 13 Participants
  • Parents – 3 Participants

An online survey was also provided to all stakeholders. The online survey collected over 193 responses. The results show the following participation from stakeholders:

  • 34% of respondents were staff.
  • 5% of respondents were students.
  • 50% of respondents parents/guardians
  • 11% of respondents community members

All the survey results and comments have been reviewed by the Board of Education. We worked with a third-party to capture your feedback. We did this through the online survey and focus groups meetings. The information gathered has been used to create a profile for our next district leader.

Over the next few weeks the Board of Education will conduct interviews. We would like to thank our staff, students and community for taking the time to provide their feedback.

Lastly, we learned earlier this week that our high school has earned the College Board’s AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for expanding young women’s access to AP Computer Science Principles.

This award acknowledges 1,127 schools for their work toward equal gender representation during the 2022-23 school year. A huge shout out to Mrs. Helen Delorenzo, our AP Computer Science teacher, for being an excellent role model for all of our students, especially our young women who have interest in STEM related fields.

Accolades like this for our high school is really an award for all the staff and community members who believe in high expectations for all students.

We are all extremely proud of our advanced placement opportunities. To be recognized nationally is a testament to what we’re all about here in Streetsboro.

Have a safe and relaxing weekend with your family and friends. And as always, Go Rockets!
