This time of year, we always seem to transition to the “fast and furious” mode as we sprint to the final days of school. Our spring athletics are in full swing and all of the teams are playing hard and representing our school district in a positive light.
I would like to encourage everyone to get out and watch our softball and baseball teams compete at our beautiful fields and spend some time at our stadium watching our track teams compete. You will be amazed at how well our athletes perform!
We have a couple of very important events coming up that EVERY parent needs to know about and attend. With all of the concerns we as a school community have centering around the use of social media, have two events on the schedule these next two weeks designed to help all of us help our students while they’re online.
Please make note of these very important learning opportunities:
Tuesday, April 25th, from 6:00 to 8:00pm in the high school auditorium our PTA invites you to “A Night About Internet Safety.”
This Parents Only program will feature Jesse Weinberger, host of the Internet Safety Podcast: Big Mama’s House.
This must-see event will highlight:
- Value vs. Risk of technology use
- Parental complicity
- Mental health impacts
- Cyberbullying, sexting & sexual predation
- Popular apps explained
- Extreme content and gaming
- How to monitor, supervise and consequences
Earlier this month, Jesse spoke to students at Defer Intermediate and the middle school. She will be sharing some recently collected and quite shocking data about our own kids’ online activities. Please plan to attend this powerful, Parents Only, event next week!
Wednesday, May 10th, from 6:00 to 8:00 again at the high school, the Streetsboro City School District CARES team will present our first Internet and Safety Forum for ALL parents and guardians in the district.
The opening session will feature Mr. and Mrs. Woods, the parents of James Woods, along with a spokesperson from the Internet Crimes Against Children Division.
During this powerful opening session, parents will hear the Woods tell the tragic story regarding their son James and sextortion and a speaker from the Internet Crimes Against Children will provide factual information to all parents regarding keeping our kids safe on the internet.
Following the opening session will be breakout rooms specific to the grade levels at each building. Our CARES team, made up of our counselors, social worker and school psychologists, will lead these sessions and provide age-specific guidance relevant to keeping our children safe and mentally healthy.
CHILD CARE will be provided for FREE in the gymnasium by our own Streetsboro High School Students. Donations will be accepted for childcare and will be given to the James Woods Foundation. Look for more information from your building principals very soon.
We really hope parents will take time out of their busy schedules to attend these extremely important events. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s building principal.
I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend. Hang on because the next several weeks will fly by and summer will be here before you know it.
Sincerely,
R. Michael Daulbaugh
Superintendent
