1 District News Rocket Update

🚀 Rocket Updates – 26 AUG 2022

Good afternoon and welcome to the weekend!

Can you believe we have completed our first full week of school? As I traveled to each building this week, I have been impressed by the students and staff on how orderly and engaged everyone has been. Students are thoughtfully participating in class discussions and teachers are already providing engaging and high-quality lessons.

Also, all of the buildings (except the high school which has their drill coming up) have completed their required first fire drill of the year. I was amazed at how quickly and orderly our buildings were evacuated. Well done to all!

In this update, I have some very important information to share with you. Some of this information isn’t new, but important nonetheless. Please take time to read the following:

Final Forms: We still have many families who have not completed their Final Forms requirements. It is critical that these forms are completed as soon as possible as the information taken from these forms is vital to the operation of the school district including keeping your child safe in the event of an emergency. Thank you in advance for making this a priority!

Technology Fee: This year we rolled out a new technology fee of $50 per student. While we know this fee may be a burden to some families, please know it enables us to successfully sustain our 1:1 Chromebook program for all students. The 1:1 program was initially started as a way to deliver instruction during the pandemic. Federal funds were used to purchase enough devices for all students and staff to use.

However, these Federal funds are already expended and the government has not allocated additional funds for school districts. The only way to continue our 1:1 initiative is to fund this through a technology fee.

Please understand that most districts have a fee like this in place in order to sustain similar initiatives. For any student who is on Free or Reduced lunch, this fee will be waived.

If you bring your own device, it MUST meet the specifications required for our network. If it does, then the technology fee will be waived. Please check with your individual building for more information.

Athletic Events: Over the past several years, we have observed an increase of elementary and middle school-aged children being unsupervised at school-sponsored athletic events. Unsupervised children pose many safety concerns for all spectators trying to enjoy our middle and high school teams.

Moving forward, all elementary and middle school-aged children MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times while attending after-school events on campus. If students are left unaccompanied, they will be asked to return to their seats with their parents or asked to leave.

Please understand that unaccompanied children are a safety issue and we need adequate supervision to monitor students. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we work together to correct this problem at our athletic events.

Busing: As you have heard many times, there is a national shortage of bus drivers across the country. Almost every district in Ohio shares this problem. As the school year progresses, please understand that we may have to cancel transportation, sometimes at the last minute, to and from school, and to athletic events.

Our Transportation Department does their very best with the resources available. However, we cannot transport students if we do not have drivers available. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Job Opportunities: We currently have several open positions in the school district. If you are interested in or know someone who needs a job, please let them know of the following available positions:

  • 5-6 full-time bus driver positions (We will provide the necessary training – no experience necessary!)
  • Substitute bus driver positions
  • One full-time Level III custodian
  • One full-time certified Tutor at Streetsboro Elementary School
  • Substitute teachers

Our pay and benefits are competitive with area school districts and we have great students and staff to work with on a daily basis. Please consider applying today for one of our vacant positions.

Please consider joining our PTA. This support organization is amazing and does so much for our students and staff. By joining our PTA, you have the opportunity to be a part of our school community and to help serve our students and staff. You can join by signing up on the PTA Facebook page or by contacting your child’s school.

Space is available for role model students in our preschool program. Please contact Streetsboro Elementary School for additional information about the preschool program and role model student qualifications.

It is my hope that everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend. We have many activities and events planned this fall so watch for communication coming home from your child’s building principal. Stay safe and Go Rockets!
