Rocket Updates – February 12th, 2021

🌤️ Good afternoon Rocket Families!

Happy Friday and welcome to a nice, long weekend. Remember, we do not have school on Monday due to President’s Day. Also, please keep an eye on the weather as it looks like a major weather system could hit us Monday night into Tuesday. Should we need to have a calamity day, I will make every effort to call it as early as possible.

⚠️ NO SCHOOL MONDAY 2/15 – PRESIDENT’S DAY 2021 ⚠️

Last night at the Board of Education meeting, I presented the plan to return our students to in-person instruction from the current Hybrid Learning Model we are following.

Our administrative team and staff have been working hard to come up with a way to safely do this while adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Ohio Department of Health and the CDC. Please make note of the following guides for each school.

🎒 Streetsboro Elementary School & Henry Defer Intermediate School

The week of February 22, students at both Streetsboro Elementary School and Henry Defer Intermediate School will return to face to face instruction four days a week using the following schedule.

Those students who are synchronous remote learning (SRL) will follow the same schedule from home.

  • Monday: All students will attend in person. SRL students will attend from home.
  • Tuesday: All students will attend in person. SRL students will attend from home.
  • 💻 Wednesday: Asynchronous Learning for all students (at home). Students will log in at home and complete all assignments.
  • Thursday: All students will attend in person. SRL students will attend from home.
  • Friday: All students will attend in person. SRL students will attend from home.

Wednesdays will be used by our staff to plan lessons and offer remediation to our students who are struggling. Teaching a full classroom of students while teaching several SRL students at the same time is an extremely difficult challenging task.

Having this day to prepare and plan is a critical support our staff needs in order to continue to provide the top quality education all our students deserve during this pandemic.

🎯 To that end, our goal is to get to five days of instruction for all of our students. In order to accomplish this task, additional supports are needed for our staff. Should this mean hiring additional staff, we will use this time to post, interview and hire these new positions.

However, it is important to note that if we are able to find and hire people to fill these positions, a significant amount of training will be required. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to get our students back to school five days a week and provide the needed supports to our staff to make this happen effectively.

🎒 Streetsboro Middle School

Streetsboro Middle School will remain in its current Hybrid Model of Instruction. Mr. Suber and the middle school team are working together to identify students who are demonstrating intense need for additional support. School staff will be in contact with parents, and identified students will begin attending the week of February 22 using the following schedule.

  • Monday: Group A students and at risk students in need of intense school support in person. Group B students synchronous from home.
  • Tuesday: Group A students and at risk students in need of intense school support in person. Group B students synchronous from home.
  • 💻 Wednesday: Asynchronous Learning for all students (at home). Students will log in at home and complete all assignments.
  • Thursday: Group B students and students in need of intense school support in person. Group A students synchronous from home.
  • Friday: Group B students and students in need of intense school support in person. Group A students synchronous from home.

We recognize the benefit that face to face instruction provides for our students. Mr. Suber and Ms. Zenker, along with the staff at the middle school, are working diligently to get all Streetsboro Middle School students back into school for four days a week following the same schedule as Streetsboro Elementary and Henry Defer Intermediate Schools.

The team is working to develop creative solutions to allow our Middle School students to return following Portage County Health department guidelines. They are hopeful that by the beginning of the fourth nine weeks (March 15) we can implement this plan. Please stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

🎒 Streetsboro High School

Based on both parent and staff feedback, Streetsboro High School will remain on its current schedule. There will not be any changes at this time.

😷 Finally, the Streetsboro staff will have the opportunity to receive the first of two vaccinations for COVID-19 on Thursday, February 25. The details are currently being worked out by the district and the vaccine provider. As soon as plans are finalized, I will communicate these plans to our school community.

💉 Due to the limited number of hours and number of staff to be vaccinated, we will likely have a Remote Learning or Asynchronous Learning Day that day.

Thank you for your continued support of our staff and students as we continue to navigate these uncharted waters. I can assure you that our staff are working hard to juggle everything and continue to provide an outstanding educational experience for our students.

🚀 I hope everyone has a nice weekend and please be safe. Go Rockets!

Sincerely,

R. Michael Daulbaugh
