Dear Streetsboro High School Families,

The third academic quarter is complete, we are one week (seven school days) from Spring Break and, as if these facts are not enough to remind us that the end of the year is near, caps & gowns were distributed to our seniors today during lunchtime.  The class of 2019 is deciding where they will be next fall – which college campus, which career or job they will pursue. Our current junior, sophomore and freshmen classes are busy deciding which courses they will request for next year, while our current eighth graders (and their parents) are beginning to familiarize themselves with SHS and our school community.

Before we bring this school year to a close, however, there is a lot to do on our end.  State testing, AP testing, year end ceremonies, final exams and our 2019 Commencement Ceremony (Tuesday, May 28, at the Akron Civic Theater) will all happen between now and the end of the school year, Thursday, May 30.

This Friday, March 15, the SHS Band will perform in the OMEA Large Group Performance at Medina HS.  They will perform at 5:30 in the Medina HS Performing Arts Center.  Also, the band has recently started fundraising for next year’s Disney Trip – totally funded by band members.  If you see a band fundraiser in the next few months, please consider supporting it. They have a lot of money to raise!

This Saturday, March 16, please consider joining us for the Streetsboro Levy Committee’s Pancake Breakfast / Streetsboro City Schools Showcase.  The event will run from 9 am – 12 and will include raffles, prizes and presentations from various academic services that students receive in the district.  THRIVE and the SHS Band will perform, as well. Pancake breakfasts are available for $2 and will be served in the SHS Commons; all proceeds go to Streetsboro Levy Committee.  Please try to join us!

Students will be off from March 23 – March 31 for Spring Break (they will also be off from April 19 – April 22).  When students arrive back from Spring Break, we will be in testing season. One week after their return from Spring Break, all juniors will be administered the SAT on Tuesday, April 9.  If you are the parent of a junior, please encourage your student to complete some SAT practice on the Khan Academy website over their break.  We do this with them in school, but some practice during their week off should help them score better.

The following two days, April 10 & 11, we will be administering the English I & II End of Course exams.  This means that freshmen and sophomore students will be testing those mornings, while juniors and seniors will be permitted to arrive late (9:00).  Subsequent End of Course exams will be administered each week until the end of the month (Biology, 4/16 & 17, US Hist & Government, 4/24, Algebra I & Geometry, 4/30 & 5/1).  On each of these testing days, students that are not testing will be asked to arrive to school by 9:00 (classes begin at 9:15).  If there is no alternative, students will be able to ride the bus and wait in the Commons each day until school begins at 9:15.  Please look for more emails with specific testing information as we get closer to these dates.

There will also be Advanced Placement (AP) testing in May, however, these tests will not alter the schedule of our school day.  Only students testing in those areas need to be concerned about those testing logistics.

Thank you for all of the support and assistance that you provide for us, as a school, but also your students.  If there is ever a concern or a question regarding your student, please do not hesitate to contact us, Mr. Newman, Assistant Principal, or me, by calling the SHS Main Office, (330)626-4902, or by email, jhogue@scsrockets.org or anewman@scsrockets.org.

Respectfully,

James Hogue, SHS Principal
