Streetsboro City Schools Awarded $400,000 in Latest Round of Ohio’s K-12 School Safety Grant Program

Streetsboro, OH

Streetsboro City Schools announced today that it has been awarded $400,000 in grant funding as part of the latest round of Ohio’s K-12 School Safety Grant Program. This program provides funding support for physical safety and security upgrades in schools across Ohio.

On April 25, 2023, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that a total of 624 schools would receive a combined $42 million in grants as part of Round 5 of the program.

House Bill 45, signed by Governor DeWine in January 2023, more than doubled the initial allotment of $105 million provided by Ohio’s operating budget and the American Rescue Plan Act. With Round 5, more than $215 million has been awarded to 2,789 Ohio K-12 schools to help pay for physical security expenses.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant funding, which will enable us to enhance our school security measures and keep our students and staff safe,” said C.J. Scarcipino, Chief Business Officer at Streetsboro City Schools.

Andreas Johansson, Director of Operations at Streetsboro, who together with Mr. Scarcipino, wrote and submitted the grant application, agreed.

“The grant will allow us to install additional security cameras, enhanced public address systems, as well as upgrade various components of our building safety infrastructure and systems across campus,” Johansson shared.

The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission administers the program in partnership with the Ohio School Safety Center. Eligible schools could receive as much as $100,000 per building.

Streetsboro was awarded $100,000 per instructional building, including the high school, middle school, intermediate school, and elementary school towards critical safety components.

“We thank Governor DeWine, the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, and the Ohio School Safety Center for their commitment to school safety,” said Mr. Scarcipino. “This grant funding will go a long way in ensuring that our schools are equipped with the necessary security measures to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students.”
