August 30th, 2022 – 1:1 TECH FEE FAQ
Tech fee – is that new?
Yes – the district implemented a technology fee of $50 during August’s BOE meeting to enable the continuation of the 1:1 initiative where all students have access to their own Chromebook in the classroom, with take-home rights as needed.
What does the tech fee cover?
The tech fee helps us replenish and replace devices only. With over 2,000 devices in rotation, and a lifespan of three years, Chromebooks need to be replaced on a cycle to keep inventory fresh, and working devices in the hands of students and staff.
The tech fee only covers hardware replacement. There are multiple other software, management licenses, and curriculum costs not recovered in the tech fee.
Can my student use their own device?
Yes. As long as their device meets the minimum requirements listed on our 1:1 website, here: https://sites.google.com/scsrockets.org/rocket121/ a student is free to use their own device.
What happens to state testing requirements?
During state testing, students who use their own devices during the year are required to sign out a loaner for the testing events as only school devices can be secured for testing (based on state requirements for test security).
Will I still be responsible for damages to the school equipment?
Yes. Repairs or any damages incurred to school equipment are not covered by the tech fee. The tech fee only helps us replenish the device inventory, and users are responsible for any damages like broken screens, missing chargers, etc.
I have more questions – where can I get more information?
