Published yesterday in the district's Rocket Review e-newsletter to families and the community:
Streetsboro City Schools has a history of taking steps to manage district finances and reduce costs for taxpayers. One example is the refinancing of bonds originally approved by voters in November 2013 to help fund construction of the new Streetsboro High School.
In 2013, Streetsboro City Schools placed a bond issue and tax levy before the voters to fund the construction of the new Streetsboro High School. The ballot language established a repayment period extending through 2049, with 2049 designated as the final year of tax collections for the bond issue. The community approved the measure, authorizing the District to move forward with this important investment in our schools.
In 2020, the district refinanced the outstanding 2014 bond issuance in response to more favorable interest rates. By taking advantage of these market conditions, the District secured more than $5.28 million in projected savings for taxpayers over the remaining life of the bonds.
Importantly, the refinancing did not extend the original repayment timeline. The maturity date of the refunding bonds remains 2049, consistent with the original schedule presented to voters. This allowed the District to reduce borrowing costs while maintaining the established repayment timeframe.
The 2020 refinancing is an example of the District’s ongoing commitment to responsible financial management, prudent debt oversight, and protecting taxpayer resources. By proactively monitoring financial markets and evaluating opportunities to reduce borrowing costs, the District works to maximize the value of public dollars while honoring the commitments approved by the Streetsboro community.
Looking ahead, the District will continue to monitor interest rates and evaluate potential refinancing opportunities. Any future refinancing would be considered carefully, with a focus on achieving meaningful savings, maintaining responsible debt management practices, and delivering the greatest possible benefit to Streetsboro taxpayers.
Managing taxpayer dollars responsibly includes looking for opportunities to reduce costs whenever possible. The district's previous bond refinancings are examples of how we can lower debt service costs while honoring the repayment terms originally approved by our community. Streetsboro City Schools remains committed to transparent financial reporting and providing residents with clear information about district finances, debt obligations and the use of taxpayer dollars.
