Streetsboro High School is proud to introduce its inaugural Girls Flag Football program—an exciting new opportunity that reflects our continued commitment to expanding athletic access and creating meaningful experiences for all students. What began as a conversation last spring has quickly turned into a dynamic and competitive program that is already making an impact both within our school and across Northeast Ohio.
The idea for girls flag football at SHS began when Athletic Administrator Randy Tevepaugh connected with the Youth and Girls Flag Football for the Cleveland Browns. Through that partnership, Streetsboro successfully launched its first team and helped spark broader interest in the sport as other area schools learned about the opportunity and committed to starting their own teams, contributing to the rapid growth of the sport heading into the 2026 season.
A key factor in the program’s success is the incredible support from the Cleveland Browns organization, which has championed girls flag football in Ohio since 2021. What started as a small initiative has now expanded to more than 120 teams statewide. Even more impressive, the Browns provide participating schools with full startup support at no cost, including uniforms, equipment, coaching resources, and officiating fees. This level of investment has allowed schools like Streetsboro to build a program quickly and remove barriers for student participation.
The Rockets are led by Head Coach Jon Hannan, who stepped up to take on the challenge of leading the program in its inaugural season. Jon, who also serves as the high school cross country coach, brings both a strong athletic background and a passion for working with students. He is supported by Assistant Coaches Margie Spinner and Steve Suchy, whose combined efforts have helped establish a positive, competitive, and student-centered team culture.
The team has already made a strong impression in its opening games, showcasing resilience and determination. The Rockets earned a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Cuyahoga Falls, 20–18, followed by a hard-fought game against North Royalton. They bounced back in impressive fashion with an overtime win against Stow, 32–26. Senior Olivia Johnson-Wilson has emerged as a standout leader, leading the team with seven rushing touchdowns while also making key defensive plays. Junior quarterback Ava Scisciani has contributed through the air with two touchdown passes, connecting with senior Kendall Epple and junior Jenna Fall, while both Johnson-Wilson and Epple have come up with critical interceptions on defense.
As the season continues, the excitement surrounding girls flag football at Streetsboro High School continues to grow. The Rockets are eager to keep building on their early success. This inaugural season represents more than just a new sport—it highlights our commitment to innovation, student engagement, and providing opportunities that prepare our students for success both on and off the field.
